The character Macbeth changes throughout the play. The author Shakespeare has shown this by Macbeth’s relationship with Banquo before and after the murder, the witches prophesy starting his thinking and how he starts being dominated and bullied by Lady Macbeth to acting independently of her.

Macbeth and Banquo’s relationship changes throughout the play. Before Macbeth murders Duncan they are the best of friends, they have fought beside each other together in wars and they came across the witches together. They pretty much did everything together. When Macbeth was creeping about at night Banquo stumbles upon him and says “who goes there?” Macbeth replies “A friend.” This shows that Macbeth and Banquo are still friends. But once Macbeth was made king their friendship was ended because Macbeth worries too much about Banquo suspecting him of foul play which Banquo does. “thou has it now, King, Cawdor, Glamis all as the weird women promised and I fear thou has play’dst foully for’t. This shows that Banquo suspects Macbeth of killing Duncan to become king. It also shows how everything has fallen into place for Macbeth. Macbeth’s changing relationship with Banquo shows how he has changed throughout the play.

The witches prophesy starts Macbeth’s thinking. Before the witches prophesy Macbeth was content with just being himself. He would just take things as they came and never go out of his way to get something. He spoke very little after the witches’ prophecy, but after he was made Thane of Cawdor he began to talk “Glamis, and Thane of Cawdor: the greatest is behind.” This shows that he thinks that nothing else is going to happen and he has became Glamis and Cawdor because of luck. But soon he opens to the idea of murdering Duncan to take the throne. He comes to the conclusion that he can’t kill Duncan; it takes Lady Macbeth to change his mind. After he kills the King in cold blood he becomes more and more confident. He seeks out the witches and demands answers with his new found confidence. He then thinks he is invincible as the witches tell him that no man born of a woman can kill him. The witches prophesy starts Macbeth’s thinking and changes him from a nobleman to a murdering coward.

Macbeth starts by being dominated and bullied by Lady Macbeth to acting and thinking independently of her. At the start Macbeth is quiet in his relationship with Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is the boss of the relationship and does everything. An example of Lady Macbeth dominating and bullying Macbeth is when Macbeth comes to a decision on whether or not he wants to kill Duncan “we will proceed no further in this business” and Lady Macbeth steps in and changes his mind. After they kill Duncan, Macbeth feels guilty of what he has just done. Whereas Lady Macbeth is busy worrying about disposing of the evidence and framing the people that were supposed to be looking after the king. But after this Macbeth realises that this murder won’t be the last. The quote “blood will have blood” shows this. Macbeth then doesn’t need Lady Macbeth anymore and he begins to act upon his on wills and does what he wants to. When Lady Macbeth dies he merely says “She would have died hereafter.” This shows that Macbeth does not need Lady Macbeth anymore and he has started to act and think independently of her. It also shows how he doesn’t care and how he has let go of Lady Macbeth. Macbeth starts off being dominated by Lady Macbeth to acting independently of her.

In conclusion the character Macbeth changes throughout the play. The author has shown this by his changing relationship with Banquo, the witches starting his thinking and how he starts off being dominated and bullied by Lady Macbeth to acting independently of her. I think that the author was trying to convey the message that crimes never pay and it all catches up with you eventually. Macbeth changing from a brave hero to an evil tyrant ultimately led to his death.
